Abdiel Kent account books, 1833-1857.

An account book and three day books from Abdiel Kent's boot and shoe factory. The account book dates from 1833 to 1834. The first daybook dates from 1834 to 1836, the second from 1838 to 1840, and the third dates from 1847 to 1857. Although not mentioned in the town history, Kent also appears to have acquired a blacksmithing operation. A brief daybook for a blacksmith was inserted in the first daybook (XMSC 20:8), covering the years 1836 to 1837.

Abdiel Kent was born on November 10, 1805 in Calais, Vermont, the son of Remember and Rachel (Bliss) Kent. When he was 21 he moved to New Hampshire where he studied the mason's trade and opened a factory. He returned to Calais around 1830 and established a boot and shoe factory. In 1832 the factory added merchandise. In 1837 he became partners with his brother, Ira, and the store became "I. & A. Kent, Boot and Shoe Manufacturers". This shop operated for about 40 years.
